A Boardwalk Empire Wedding at Loew's Jersey City

Words and Pictures by Angela Cappetta

When Lee + Sarah brought me in to document their wedding, they already had their venue selected.  When I learned where it was, I shrieked quietly with delight.  Once upon a time, the Loew's Jersey City theater was a glistening palace to talking pictures, however, time made it into a ruin.  Now, it's restored and landmarked because of it's historic significance. The building's opulence (think velvet, gas lamps and solid marble everywhere) transports the visitor back to the time of nickel picture shows and trolleys.  From red velvet theater chairs, guests sighed as Sarah shimmered down the center aisle in a teal gown with cream roses in her bouquet.

From the pipe organ to the candy machine to the ghosts of cigarette girls, Lee and Sarah embraced the Boardwalk Empire style of the venue, even Sarah's dress was a historically accurate vintage find (nabbed for a few bucks at a thrift shop and altered to perfection).  When they said their vows on the motorized stage that raised and lowered them up and down for the ceremony, there wasn't a dry eye in the house.  It makes one wonder if fictional gangster from Boardwalk Empire Nucky Thompson would have been so moved to see such love on his turf.
