Nordic Inspired Anniversary Shoot
Rensselaerville, New York
I've shot so many engagements and weddings I've lost count. I've been in more airplanes and cities to shoot jobs that I could reach my air miles back and forth to the moon. Coach, first class, business, editorial, advertising, personal exploration, you name it, I've shot it. But I never shot an anniversary shoot. "What's the point" I'd posit, and I'd leave those requests in my in-box ignored so as to deal with more pressing matters. Until now.
This couple has changed my mind forever about what anniversary shoot photography can mean. My cameras froze, my fingers went numb, my nose sniffled, I wore my biggest, baddest hiking attire, I was plump with layers of polar fleece. I was reminded that if shooting something wasn't hard, it wouldn't be any fun.
A little background: Tyler and Jennifer live in a manor home in a town stilled in time to 1808. Their blue mansion has a name: Catalpa House, I refer to it as the Mother Ship. They have made a home in idyllic Rensselaerville, NY. Their property happens to be shouting distance to the Hyuck Preserve, an active set of trails and waterfalls that take a completely different shape in the winter, becoming mythological in the snow, setting the perfect tone for this deep-woods winter anniversary shoot.
"Every year since we were married, Tyler and I have spent our anniversary taking photos to preserve a 'snapshot' of our relationship as it grows and changes. Our first three years of marriage have been a journey filled with highs, lows and memories of simple but special moments. A winter walk felt like the perfect way to represent this feeling. We pulled out some of our favorite clothes-- the red dress I wore to his sister's wedding, the suit Tyler wore to ours-- packed some hot chocolate, and headed to the nearby snow-filled nature preserve. Tyler dipped the marshmallows in crushed peppermint for a special touch and I wrapped a hand-made number 3 in yarn to mark the occasion. Both the lake and waterfall were frozen but dazzling, and Angela was amazing as she braved the cold bare-handed so she could work her magic with a vintage lens. We always look forward to these little anniversary shoots and the simple, cozy feeling of this one was perfectly wonderful."
