Scottish Highlands Meets Hipster Wedding

The Background:
Dr. Owen Muir MD and Dr. Carlene MacMillan MD met at a child psychiatry conference in Disney World. Yes. Disney World. After navigating a long-distance relationship that encompassed arduous medical training for several years, the couple was delighted to enjoy such a low stress day.

The two enjoyed a wedding day that reflected both their heritage and their new life together in in the hipster promise-land of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. In addition to being half-Scottish, they are also psychiatrists. This was no surprise to friends of the couple know them as lovers of exotic cuisine and mid-century modern furniture- typical to Williamsburg denizens. There was a small ceremony and reception for 8 guests; spontaneous and involving fine dining, Scottish flair, and an infusion of high fashion.

The wedding party got ready in a converted old Catholic church. As the bride and groom are both atheists, this was the closest they would come to a church on the wedding day. The groom wore a traditional Scottish kilt in the Muir family tartan which he purchased on a family trip to Scotland when he was a teenager. The bride, wanting to honor their shared Scottish heritage, opted for a chic design by Scottish designer Alexander McQueen with a signature clutch featuring a clasp in the shape of a (natch: hipster) skull.

After their first look, the bride changed from her glitter soled Rene Caovilla heels into her tried-and-true Chuck Taylors to walk to the ceremony. The wedding party then walked down North 6th Street to the East River Ferry, which took them to the Brooklyn Bridge Park. Prior to departing for the Ferry, the couple pit stopped into Toby’s for iced coffee and also stopped to check out some free stuff in a box on the sidewalk.

The ceremony took place in Brooklyn Bridge Park and was officiated by the groom’s brother-in-law. It opened with the Bride’s father leading a mindfulness exercise on gratitude using a traditional Tibetan singing bowl. They then participated in a Scottish hand-fasting ceremony (quite literally ‘tying the knot’) using custom rope to reflect the groom's family's Muir Tartan. The groom then read a passage from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy on improbable connections. The bride then read Dorothy Parker poem “The Passionate Freudian to his Love,” as a nod to the couple's shared psychiatric professions. The ceremony concluded with a ring exchange.

The reception took place in the private room of Per Se. Guests enjoyed a tasting menu followed by a tour of the kitchen.  The day after the wedding, the couple held a more informal housewarming party for friends and extended family at their home in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
